MADE FOR TOURISTS

KWAZULU-NATAL could have been designed for tourism. No other region in the world has quite the same combination of scenic grandeur, wealth and diversity of wildlife and modern infrastructure.

The range of the province's climatic and habitat diversity is extraordinary. High mountain peaks in the west - often snow-clad - give way to alpine grassland, to the verdant sourveld and forests of the Midlands, to thornveld, to sub-tropical coastal forests and dunes and, finally, to coral reefs. The region also has some of Africa's great saltwater and freshwater lakes and wetlands.

The diversity sets up a corresponding range of insect, reptile, bird and animal life. KwaZulu-Natal is home to the Big Five - lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo - and dozens of other species.

Inspired conservation practices since the 1940s have seen what amounts to a gigantic dry-land Noah's Ark operation. Several species have been rescued from local extinction or near-extinction, and the white rhino has been saved from total extinction. Game numbers are building up fast; vast tracts of ranch land are being re-stocked with game instead of cattle and transformed into private game reserves.

Indeed, KwaZulu-Natal's wildlife today resembles the teeming abundance of the nineteenth century when it became a favourite haunt of hunters and marauders who ravaged the land.

Kneaded into this natural diversity is a human diversity and the rich history it has brought with it. KwaZulu-Natal has the battlefields of the Anglo/Zulu War, the brooding eeriness of Isandlwana and the sense of wonder of Rorke's Drift. It also has some of the famous battlefields of the Anglo/Boer War.

Today's human population interacts with great vibrancy and is an attraction in itself.

KwaZulu-Natal is a meeting point of Africa, Asia and Europe. Zulu culture blends with sounds, scents and colours that are authentically of the Orient and with the modern attributes of Europe. The mixture is unique.

KwaZulu-Natal has a variety to offer: mountains, surfing beaches, idyllic countryside, wildlife, Zulu and Oriental culture and history. None of it is more than a few hours' drive from Durban International Airport.
